Since you’re still here, chances are you’ll resonate with my Inner Bitch infestation.
For years, I was bullied by a voice inside my head constantly telling me I’m not good enough, that I’ll never have a nice car, or a job I love, that I’ll always be overweight, single and miserable. I used to lie awake night after night wondering what the hell was wrong with me.
My Inner Bitch knew those sleepless nights were the perfect time to torture me: ‘Why is your life so shit?’ ‘Why are you always skint?’, ‘Why are you so crap at your job?’, ‘Why aren’t you as good as your friends?’
Despite that voice making me want to rip my own head off, I clung to the dream of becoming that all-elusive ‘best self’. Deep down, I believed I would publish the book I’d yearned to write since childhood and live that ‘best life’ everyone bangs on about… even though I had no idea what any of that looked like or how to get there.
I had no idea I was sabotaging myself. It didn’t occur to me that those thoughts weren’t true. And I most definitely did not have the slightest inkling that I had the power to change all that.
I was completely clueless… I didn’t even know I was repeating negative patterns, let alone how to break free from them. Even when I summoned up the courage to take action – usually in the form of trying to lose weight, dating, writing, or looking for a new job – my Inner Bitch would rear her ugly head, goading me to give up, because, ‘What’s the point? You’ll only fail. Again.’
Once I knocked myself down again, the downward spiral continued. Only I didn’t know I was knocking myself down. I honestly thought it was just the way I was. Undeserving of ‘better’.
Each time I sank, it felt like I’d reached a record rock-bottom low, yet each new breaking point had me seeking answers. I had this kinda feeling I couldn’t shake, couldn’t really put into words, that all my issues were all down to one thing, and if I could work out what that was, then I could change everything. In my head I saw it as a tangle of padlocks all joined together, and once I found the key I’d be able to release them all.
Little did I know that I was that key. All I had to do was change my way of thinking. Sounds so simple doesn’t it? But it’s not. It’s actually really frikin’ hard.
But I persevered, and I’ve found loads of ways to trick my Inner Bitch into buggering off.
I’ve uncovered the key to forgiving myself for all those perceived wrongs. I’ve learned to trust my instincts and make choices that lead to genuine happiness. When you really drill it down, our aspirations boil down to that one thing: happiness.
Yes, we all know that to be truly happy we have to love ourselves first and know our own value, but we’re so sick of reading it that we switch off when the words ‘self-love’ appear. It’s trotted out so often that it’s become a cliche. We’ve lost what it truly means. Actively seeking to love oneself on your own is also far from easy.
That’s why I’m sooo bloomin’ excited. It took me years to fathom out how to really, truly see my own worth. And now that I have, it all seems so simple. I took the long not-so-pretty route so you don’t have to. Let’s Ditch your Inner Bitch together. Before long, that voice in your head that says ‘you can’t’ will be replaced by one that says ‘You CAN and you bloody well will!’.
Ohhh and I cannot wait for you to meet your Inner Bestie! She’s a gorgeous surprise, you’re gonna absolutely LOVE that chick!
